MS-104 Technical Mathematics I

Course Description:
The first of two courses designed to provide vocational students with the mathematical tools needed to succeed in selected occupational programs. Topics covered are basic mathematics, measurements, and the fundamental concepts of algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

  • Prerequisite Course: Admission (MS 100 level) or “C” or better in MS 094
  • A. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs):

    The student will be able to:

    1. Demonstrate understanding and apply mathematical concepts in problem solvingand in day to day activities.
    2. Present and interpret numeric information in graphic forms.
    3. Communicate thoughts and ideas effectively using proper mathematical terms.

    B. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs) - GENERAL:

    The student will be able to:
    1. Score 80% (B grade) or better in the basic math post-test.
    2. Compare U.S. customary and metric standards of measurement and convert between the two.
    3. Perform fundamental algebraic calculations and solve linear equations.
    4. Determine by measurement the area of rectangles, squares, parallelograms, rhombuses, triangles, trapezoids and circles.
    5. Determine the volume of rectangular solids, cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres using the appropriate formula.
    6. Perform basic trigonometric calculations.

    C. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs) - SPECIFIC:

    1.2 Define decimal numbers and perform basic operations with decimal numbers.
    1.3 Define fractions and perform basic operations with fractions.

    1.4 Describe percent and perform conversion between percent and its equivalent number and vice-versa.

    1.5 Solve percentage problems involving percent of increase or decrease using the formula or proportion.

    1.6 Define signed numbers.

    1.7 Perform basic operations with signed numbers.

    General SLO 2. Compare U.S. customary and metric standards of measurement and convert between the two.

    2.1 Define precision and determine which measurement applications require more or less precision.

     

     

    Competence will be demonstrated through pretest, assignments,
    quizzes, and tests. 

    2.2 Define accuracy and determine which measurement applications require more or less accuracy.

    2.3 Convert one U.S customary unit of measure to another.

    2.4 Convert one metric unit of measure to another.

    2.5 Convert between metric and U.S. measurement systems.

    2.6 Express measurement numbers in standard notation.

    2.7 Convert numbers to scientific notation and vice-versa.

    General SLO 3. Perform fundamental algebraic calculations and solve linear equations.

    3.1 Define equations and differentiate equations from
    expressions.

    3.2 Solve linear equations using the addition axiom.

    3.3 Solve linear equations using the multiplication axiom.

    3.4 Solve linear equations with fractions or decimals.

    3.5 Use linear equations format to solve applied problems.

    3.6 Evaluate formulas.

    3.7 Rearrange formulas to solve for a specified variable.

    General SLO 4. Determine by measurement the area of rectangles, squares, parallelograms, rhombuses, triangles, trapezoids, and circles.

    4.1 Describe the basic geometric figures.

     

     
    Competence will be demonstrated through pretest, assignments,
    quizzes, and tests. 

    4.2 Define and classify angles according to size.

    4.3 Determine the relationship between degree and radian and
    convert between the two units of angles.

    4.4 Describe rectangles, squares, parallelograms, rhombuses, trapezoids, and triangles and differentiate one from the others.

    4.5 Calculate the area of each polygon using a formula.

    4.6 Define a circle and its parts.

    4.7 Calculate the area and circumference of a circle using relationship and formula.

    General SLO 5. Determine the volume of rectangular solids, cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres using the appropriate formula.

    5.2 Solve problems of volume measurement in a solid rectangle.

    5.3 Differentiate between a cubic centimeter and a liter.

    5.4 Define and recognize a prism and a pyramid.

    5.5 Calculate the volume of prisms and pyramids.

    5.6 Define and recognize a cylinder and a cone and describe their relationships.

    5.7 Define and recognize a sphere.

    5.8 Using formulas for each, solve problems of cylinder, cone and sphere volume.

    General SLO 6. Perform basic trigonometric calculations.

    6.1 Define the six trigonometric functions of an angle in a standard
    right triangle.

     

     

    Competence will be demonstrated through pretest, assignments,
    quizzes, and tests. 

     

     

    6.2 Find the trigonometric values for sine, cosine, and tangent of a right triangle given at least two sides or using a calculator.

    6.3 Calculate the angle measure, given the trigonometric value.

    6.4 Find the unknown parts of a right triangle using trigonometric
    functions.

    6.5 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the unknown side of a right triangle.

    6.6 Solve right triangles using the most direct method.

    6.7 Solve applied problems using right-triangle trigonometry.
