Program Student Learning Outcomes(PSLOS)

At the completion of the Third Year Certificate in General Business, the student will be able to:

  1. GBU_PSLO_1 Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts in organizational behavior.
  2. GBU_PSLO_2 Demonstrate an understanding of the intricacies of marketing planning and overall marketing.
  3. GBU_PSLO_3 Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts underlying corporate financial decision making.
  4. GBU_PSLO_4 Demonstrate an understanding of the role of entrepreneurship and small business in the FSM economy.
  5. GBU_PSLO_5 Demonstrate basic knowledge of international business.
  6. GBU_PSLO_6 Demonstrate an understanding of economic development issues.
  7. GBU_PSLO_7 Demonstrate an understanding of statistical methods of sampling and estimating population statistics.

PSLO Assessment Report Summary

What we looked at:

The TYC in General Business Program assessment dealt with three (3) PSLOs covering three courses taught in Fall 2016. These are GBU_PSLOs 1, 5 and 6. The same students were enrolled in all the courses covering the PSLOs under assessment.

GBU_PSLO1 was covered in the course MGT320 Organizational Behavior. A capstone project, a case study, was used to assess the PSLO. The students turned in individual reports containing analysis write-ups. From these, the demonstration of their ability to describe how an individual’s psyche, biological make-up and attitudes shape and predict an individual’s behavior in an organization was assessed.

GBU_PSLO5 was assessed in the course MGT350 International Business. The instructor used an individual research work to assess GBU_MGT350_CSLO_1. Each student chose a country to which he/she will focus to study. Through the write-up requirement, the student will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of international business, the role of government in international business, cultural, political and legal issues, the theoretical foundations of international trade and investment and the international economic and financial environment. The student also recommends good business prospects in the chosen country including the requirements for entry.

PSLO6 was assessed in the course EC320 Economic Development. To assess this PSLO, the assessment result of individual projects in ECO320_CSLO_5 was used. Students were asked to develop a self-designed economic policy that demonstrates an understanding of economic development issues.

What we found:

The assessments in the three (3) PSLOs revealed positive outcomes.

For GBU_PSLO1, 13 (2 males, 11 females) out of 13 (100%) students were able to describe how an individual's psyche, biological make-up and attitudes shape and predict an individual's behavior in an organization, by obtaining at least a BENCHMARK rating based on the grading rubric in GBU_MGT_320_CSLO_2.5.

The quality of the analysis although satisfactory, still needs improvement. Only one student provided an in-depth analysis in the final paper required of them.

GBU_PSLO5 assessment showed 12 (2 males, 10 females) out of 13 (92%) students obtained at least a BENCHMARK rating on the Final Project.

Three students did not follow the prescribed format and one among these had her write-up on a PowerPoint presentation and in an outline format only. Also, analysis and recommendations in most of the papers were not very satisfactory, and these are not reflective of the students’ good syntheses of the materials that they researched.

For GBU_PSLO6, 13 (11 female; 2 male) out the 13 (100%) students who did the economic policy got a rating of 60% or higher on the rubric.

Even if all the students got a rating of 60% or higher though, many of them are on the BENCHMARK rating.

What we are planning to work on:

For the three (3) PSLOs assessed, the quality of the write-ups can still be improved. Submission of drafts will be required so that revisions will still be possible before the final drafts are turned in.

For GBU_PSLO5, the students will be required to turn in the paper component-by-component. When a relevant topic to a component is already discussed, then an output should already be required from the students.

For GBU_PSLO6, educational trip will be organized for students to visit the FSM Research and Development Office. This could improve the quality of their research paper.

Recommendations for students:

  • Consultations with the concerned instructors are always a must.
  • Critiquing maybe among each other will also give opportunity to raise the level of the quality of the write-ups.
  • Grammar, paragraph and sentence structures should already be mastered especially so since the students are already in the third year level of college. They should also consult with their writing instructors to provide feedback on their papers

Recommendations for instructors:

  • Support should always be extended to students.
  • Concepts learned in the classroom should be checked if these are evident in their outputs.
  • Other learning materials/strategies should be introduced: videos featuring case studies, industry players in related fields should be invited as resource speakers, and alternative learning opportunities should be provided. These also require coordination with the Learning Resource Center and other institutions of the College.
