ESS-102ws Open Water SCUBA Diver

Course Description:  This course will introduce students to recreational scuba diving and qualify students as a PADI Open Water Diver.  Upon course completion students will be qualified to dive with a buddy independent of supervision while within the limits of their training and experience, obtain air fills and scuba equipment, plan/conduct/log open water no decompression dives when properly equipped and when accompanied by a buddy in conditions with which they have training and/or experience, and to continue their dive training.

  • This course also meets PLO #(s) 5.1 of GEN ED program
  • Prerequisite Courses: ESL 089, Students must be capable of swimming.

A.  PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs):
The student will be able to:    
1.   Participate in regular physical activity for at least one semester.
2.   Describe the value of physical activity to a healthful lifestyle.

B.  COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs): GENERAL
The student will be able to:
1.   Complete 5 knowledge development segments, including   quizzes and final exam.
2.   Meet watermanship requirements.
3.   Complete confined water dives 1 - 5.
4.   Complete open water dives 1 – 4.

General SLO 1.  Complete 5 knowledge development segments, including   quizzes and final exam.

Assessment Strategies

1.1 Exhibit an introductory level of knowledge of all course content by completing & submitting 5 required PADI homework assignments from the required PADI Open Water Diver Manual and watching the required PADI Open Water Diver videos.

Student will submit homework assignments and any misconceptions must be clarified by the instructor and understood by the student before the student may proceed.

1.2 Demonstrate knowledge of all course content by successfully passing 4 required PADI Open Water Diver quizzes .

Student must score an 80% or higher on each quiz and student must receive continued instruction to ensure complete comprehension of any content questions missed before proceeding in the course.

1.3 Exhibit mastery of all course content by successfully passing the required PADI Open Water Diver Final Exam.

Student must score a 70% or higher on the final exam and student must receive continued instruction to ensure mastery of any content questions missed before proceeding in the course.

1.4 List the ways in which SCUBA diving can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Student will be able to list 4 ways in which SCUBA can contribute to a healthy lifestyle on a quiz.

General SLO 2.  Meet watermanship requirements.


2.1 Demonstrate that they can comfortably maintain themselves in water too deep in which to stand by completing a 10-minutes swim/float without using any swim aids.

Student will have to successfully complete the swim test under instructor supervision.  Student must pass this test in order to proceed in the course.

2.2 Complete a 200 meter continuous surface swim or a 300 meter swim with mask, fins, and snorkel.

Student will have to successfully complete the swim test under instructor supervision.  Student must pass this test in order to proceed in the course.

General SLO 3.  Complete confined water dives 1 - 5.


3.1 Demonstrate, with a student level of mastery, all diver performance requirements for PADI confined water dives.

Student will demonstrate all required skills to the instructor and student must complete all skills with a student level of mastery.  Any skills for which a student has difficulty must be practiced and mastered before the student can proceed in the course.

3.2 Complete a dive equipment checklist.

Student will organize and prepare all equipment required for a dive.

3.3 Complete a dive planning checklist.

Student will complete and submit a dive planning checklist before a dive.

General SLO 4.  Complete open water dives 1 – 4.


4.1 Demonstrate with a student level of mastery, all diver performance requirements for PADI open water dives.

Student will demonstrate all required skills to the instructor and student must complete all skills with a student level of mastery.  Any skills for which a student has difficulty must be practiced and mastered before the student can proceed in the course.

4.2 Demonstrate an appreciation for the marine environment by showing proper respect to marine life and the marine habitat while participating in diving activities.

Student will demonstrate this skill to the instructor and their dive buddy by using proper buoyancy techniques to avoid damaging marine life and by never harassing marine organisms.  Student must also not pollute or disrupt the marine environment in any other way during course activities.

E.  METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
The course will involve the use of videos, lectures, and students will be instructed in the water/ocean including watermanship activities, dives in a confined water environment, and dives in the open water with performance based training. 

F.   REQURIED TEXT(S) AND COURSE MATERIALS

  • PADI (2006). PADI Open Water Diver Manual. International PADI Inc (or most recent edition)**.

**The most current edition must always be used.  The book MUST be new, as ALL student divers are legally required to possess their own copy, otherwise an instructor can be liable for any future diving accidents in which the student is involved.  No borrowing and no used textbooks are allowed.  No student will be allowed to take the course without purchasing the required new textbook.  These textbooks can be purchased through PADI.com or any PADI professional dive center.  The PADI professional dive manual can also be downloaded in pdf form from the PADI professional website.

  • Diver Log Book and record of training.
  • Dive tables or the eRDP and instructions for use
  • Student Record File
  • The student must read and sign the following forms & the most current forms MUST be used:
  • Liability Release and Assumption of Risk Agreement (PADI 10072)
  • Medical Statement (PADI 10063)
  • Standard Safe Diving Practices Statement of Understanding (PADI 10060)
  • Open Water Diver Course Record and Referral Form (10056)

 

By ordering an Open Water Crew Pack, all the above materials/forms will be included in the pack.  Otherwise, the individual items as listed above are specifically required.  All can be purchased through PADI.com or a PADI dive center.

  • PADI Open Water Diver Video/DVD
  • The most current version of the PADI Open Water Diver Quizzes and Final Exam must be used for testing.
  • PADI instructor(s) must be in teaching status with required teaching liability insurance.
  • Required PADI instructor dive equipment and required student dive equipment.  Must follow current standards.
  • AED – automated external defibrillator
  • Emergency oxygen cylinders/kit
  • Safety Kit

 

G.  REFERENCE MATERIALS
The most current version of the PADI Digital Open Water Instructor Manual must always be used**.  Standards change, and it is illegal for instructors to neglect to keep up to date of standard changes.

H.  INSTRUCTIONAL COSTS

A course fee will need to be charged to students in order to have funds to purchase/repair/replace dive gear, to cover the costs of getting tanks filled, and to update instructor required course materials.  This fee should also go towards paying to maintain yearly instructor required PADI membership and instructor liability insurance.  Suggested course fee is $100 per student.
