Interpretation of Internet Bandwidth Utilization Graph |
- Inbound
- Average data rate as percentage of available bandwidth for Internet traffic coming in to campus. Available bandwidth is currently 1536 kilobits per second (Kbps). This traffic includes requested web pages and incoming e-mail, among other things.
- Outbound
- Average data rate as percentage of available bandwidth for Internet traffic sent from campus. This includes web pages from our server, outbound e-mail, and requests for web pages or other Internet content.
- Data Requests
- Percentage of 300 established connections to hosts on the Internet at the end of each interval (not averaged). Connections are used to send or receive web page content, e-mail, or other information. Many applications maintain a persistent connection but this data still shows a general level of activity and reveals congestion. Available bandwidth is shared among all open connections.
Data for these graphs is collected at four minute intervals. Inbound and Outbound data rates are averages for the preceding interval. Data Requests is determined at the end of each interval rather than averaged.
Data Requests occassionally exceeds 300. Values exceeding 300 are plotted at the upper edge of the graph.
