College to dedicate Science Building at Yap Campus

The College will be dedicating its newly constructed science building at Yap Campus on January 22, 2009. The structure was inspected by Alfred Olter of the college’s Facilities, Maintenance and Security office earlier in January. The new structure was funded by FEMA Program and Yap State Government. The College of Micronesia-FSM has invited dignitaries from the FSM, US Embassy, Yap State Government, and the college’s Regents to the dedication ceremony.

The new building will add more classrooms and office spaces for Yap Campus.  The science building is one of the three buildings that will be constructed at Yap this year.  The other two buildings are the student services building and the vocational education classrooms.

Two Students Represent College at U.S. Presidential Inauguration in D.C.

As reported in update #317, two COM-FSM students attend the US Presidential Inauguration and the Academic Seminars organized by the Washington Center for Internship and Academic Seminars during the week of January 10-20, 2009.  BJ B. Petrus and Marla Ongeset are in Washington, D.C. participating in the Academic Seminars and they were invited to attend the U.S. Presidential Inauguration festivities on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. 

The College paid for the travel expenses for the two students. The two are rexpected to be back by January 24, 2009. According to an email received at the college from Marla, they are doing fine and are trying to cope with the cold weather conditions. 



COM-FSM Board Approves recommendations via Teleconference

The College of Micronesia-FSM Board of Regents held a teleconference meeting on January 14, 2009, and approved the following recommendations submitted by the college administration:

  • Investment Policy on COM-FSM Endowment
  • Use of $150,000 from fund balance for construction of the access road to Nantaku property

 

The Board has also scheduled its first Special Meeting to take place at Chuuk Campus during the week of March 9-10, 2009.  The Board of Regents also requested the administration to provide talking points on future directions of the College for their discussion and action at the next meeting in Chuuk.  Other items requested by the BOR had to do with the recommendations on the future of the FSM-FMI.  Other possible action items that BOR will be considering at their March 2009 meeting include 1) a new AS degree in Teacher Education, 2) personnel policy on salaries for instructors, and 3) modifications to the existing reprogramming policy.

The preparation timeline for the March 9-13, 2009 meeting is as follows:

Pohnpei Campus Talent Search Program Students Visit to National Campus

One of the objectives of the Educational Talent Search Program (ETSP) at the College of Micronesia-FSM is to schedule college visits for participating students in the program so they can be informed about the College’s programs and services.  This year, the program scheduled visit for the students to the National Campus during the week of January 12-15, 2009. The students were presented with information about the college and the program offerings by representatives of the divisions at the National Campus.

College to hold President’s Retreat during May 2009

The Steering Committee for the President’s Retreat 2009 was organized and held its first meeting on
January 12, 2009.  The committee discussed the schedule for this year’s retreat dates and fixed them on the week of May 12-14, 2009.   The committee also discussed the tentative agenda for the retreat and recommended the following:

The College will bring staff from all its campuses in Chuuk, Kosrae and Yap to attend the President’s Retreat 2009 at the National Campus.  The College has set aside a total of $30,000 to fund the retreat.
