From: President Subject: President’s Update #321 College Holds Fall Commencement Exercises at National Campus The College of Micronesia-FSM held its 48th Commencement Exercises on December 18, 2008, at the FSM-China Friendship Sport Center. In his remarks, President James welcomed about 1000 guests, which consisted of dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, parents, friends, supporters, faculty, staff, students and 94 graduates to the commencement exercises. Father Francis Hezel, S.J. delivered the keynote. Six other graduates received their BA Degrees in Elementary Education from the University of Guam (UOG) through a partnership program established and implemented between COM-FSM and UOG during summer session 2007. Two of the program graduates were recognized for their high achievements. Ms Sylvia Henry of Pohnpei received the Magna Cum Laude and Mr Mike Ioanis also of Pohnpei received the Cum Laude awards. Both of these students are full-time employees at the College. Dr Verma Recipient of The Pacific Excellence in Extension and Outreach Service Award The Pacific Island Extension Network (PIEN) of the Land Resources Division-Secretariat of the Pacific Community (LRD-SPC) announced at the 3rd regional meeting of Heads of Agriculture and Forestry Services (HOAFS) in Apia, Samoa that it has bestowed on Dr Virendra Mohan Verma, CRE Researcher at Kosrae Campus, “the Pacific Excellence in Extension and Outreach Service Award 2008” for Micronesia Region. The Pacific extension award recognizes excellence in extension activities and services, and positive contributions toward community development in the region. The award aims to promote best practices, build capacity and encourage Pacific islanders who work with communities to strive for improved delivery of extension and outreach services. It seeks to recognize initiatives by groups or individuals in the field of agricultural extension development and implementation. The College congratulates Dr Virendra Mohan Verma for receiving this prestigious award. ![]() Dr Verma in his Research Lab at Kosrae Campus Campus Directors Meet at Pohnpei Campus The Campus directors, Cabinet members and directors of programs and serviced held a two-day meeting during the week of December 2-3, 2008 at Pohnpei Campus. The agenda of the meeting included the following: Spring Semester 2009 Registration The Spring Semester 2009 registration started at five of the college’s six sites. This is first time that the college used it student information system (SIS) in the registration process. The SIS provides direct access to and creation of student records in real time from any of the college’s campuses. The SIS network also allows for synchronous viewing of data and information from any campus. As of 5 p.m. on January 7, 2009, the following are the results of the registration for Spring Semester 2009 Campus Registered Students Projected Enrollment ![]() Left: National Campus; Center: Chuuk Campus; Right: Pohnpei Campus Kenmanglay is Gates Millennium Scholar Mr Ignatius Kenmanglay of Yap is a Gates Millennium Scholar at the College of Micronesia-FSM. The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program has a goal of increasing the number of high achieving African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic American and Asian Pacific Islander American students with significant financial need to enroll in and complete undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The scholarship can be renewed each year throughout Scholars undergraduate component of their degree, and funds will support enrollment to graduate school for Scholars who choose one of the seven disciplines: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.
