Accreditation Commission Reminds COM-FSM of 2010 Self Study

The President of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) informed President James that COM-FSM’s Comprehensive Visit for its accreditation will be conducted during either the first or second week of March 2010. President James contacted appropriate staff at the College and selected the week of March 14-18, 2010 which is the second week as first choice and the week of March 1-7, 2008 which is the first week as its second choice.

Four major committees were formed to work on the four Accreditation Standards. In response to the ACCJC expectations that self study processes involve everybody, the four committees created comprised of vice presidents, other administrators, campus directors, academic division chairs, faculty, instructional coordinators, student services coordinators, other unit reps, students, and board members and community members who are yet to be formally invited. The accreditation liaison officer (ALO) has been sent by President James to all sites to meet with faculty, staff and students as part of the kickoff for the self study review process. Through the visit by the ALO, members of the college community at each site were given the opportunity to find out more about accreditation, the self study process, their roles in the process and they were also given the opportunity to volunteer to serve on any one of the four committees.

The committees are currently working to complete the first part of the report which is the descriptive summary by December 1, 2008 . The Self-Study Report submission date to WASC is on December 1, 2009 .

Jimmy Gallen to represent COM-FSM at Okinawa Student Conference

The Center for Asia-Pacific Island Studies at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa , Japan will be hosting the Okinawa-Pacific Educational Network during the week of October 8-15, 2008 . The Ryukyus University has been given a three year grant from Sasakawa Foundation to collaborate with Postsecondary Institutions in Micronesia on this Exchange Program. The College of Micronesia-FSM is participating in this year’s program and has selected Jimmy Gallen (student) to represent the COM-FSM at this year’s program in Okinawa . Mr. Dennis Gearhart (Math/Science Instructor) will accompany Mr. Gallen to Okinawa .

President James would like to thank Mr. Gearhart for mentoring Mr. Gallen on his paper that will be presented at his year’s program in Okinawa . I also would like to congratulate Mr. Gallen for his selection to represent the College at the upcoming Student Exchange Program in Okinawa , Japan .

The administration of the College of Micronesia-FSM would like to express its congratulations to all SBA officers and wish them a successful year.

Christopher Delcampo to represent the College at Manila Conference

The Business Administration Division has been collaborating with the Asia Pacific Association of Fiduciary Studies (APAFS) on an essay contest which is being conducted at institutions of higher educations in Micronesia . The Essay Contest is on Economic Development and Investment in Micronesia . Each higher education institution in Micronesia is invited to conduct the essay contest and select the best essay from among the entrees and forward them to APAFS office in Guam . The APAFS in Guam will finalize the list of winners and inform the institutions. The winners from each of the higher education institutions in Micronesia will travel to Manila , Philippines during the week of October 7-10, 2008 , to present their winning essays at the APAFS sponsored Investment Conference.

Christopher Delcampo, a Business major at the National Campus submitted the winning essay at the College of Micronesia-FSM and will be representing the College at the APAFS Investment Conference in Manila , Philippines . All expenses for his trip to Manila will be paid for by the organizing committee and sponsors of the APAFS Investment Conference. Mr. Joe Felix, Jr. is the chaperon for Mr. Delcampo and will be traveling with the student to Manila . Congratulation to Mr. Delcampo.

BJ Petrus and Marla Ongeset to Attend USA President Inauguration

The Washington Center for Internship and Academic Seminars sent an invitation letter to President James in June 2008 to nominate two students from the College of Micronesia-FSM to attend the Presidential Inauguration program in Washington , D.C during the week of January 10-20, 2009 . This ten-day program consists of lectures, small group meetings, a bus tour of Washington, a program reception at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a visit to Washington’s latest new attraction, the Museum, and a special Washington Center performance by political humorist Mark Russell at George Washington University.

A Presidential Inauguration Selection Committee consisting of Vice President for Student Support Services Ringlen Ringlen, Mariana Ben-Dereas, Chair, Social Science Division, Delihna Manuel-Ehmes, Social Science Instructor, and Penselynn Etse, Counselor, met after receiving the required completed forms from interested students and selected Mr. BJ B. Petrus and Ms. Marla Ongeset. The names of these two students have been submitted to Dr. Michael B. Smith, President, Washington Center for Internship and Academic Seminar.

Congratulations to these students for their nomination to this prestigious program.

COM-FSM Board of Regents to hold 4 th Quarter meeting in Pohnpei in December

The Board of Regents will be having their 4 th Quarter meeting during the week of December 1-4, 2008 in Pohnpei. The major agenda of this meeting will be to review and adopt the College’s Fiscal Year 2010 operational budget. The Board will also be reviewing some policies that will be recommended to them by the administration. The Board has also directed the administration to work with its money managers, Citibank and Smith Barney, to conduct an investment workshop for members of the Board and the management team at the College. The workshop has been organized and it will be conducted on December 1, 2008 in Pohnpei.

Board of Regents to Attend PPEC Sponsored Boardmanship Training in Saipan

One of the requirements of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges to its accredited institutions is to have their Regents attend annual boardmanship training to keep them up-to-date with their roles and responsibilities. These are also good opportunities for the Board members to reexamine the expected relationships between boards and their institutions. The Pacific Postsecondary Education Council (PPEC) and the U.S. Department of Interior will be sponsoring a boardmanship training for the regional higher education institutions in Micronesia , Hawaii , and American Samoa during the week of October 27-29, 2008 .

Other important topics of the boardmanship training are on the bylaws for the Board of Regents and enabling laws for institutions in the region. Presidents from the regional institutions are also required to attend this training.

Faculty and Staff Senate Receives New Executive Officers

The Faculty/Staff Senate recently elected officers for school year 2008-2009. The newly elected officers include the following:

COM-FSM Investment Committee Re-organize

The COM-FSM Investment Committee was recently organized during the week of October 1, 2008 with the following members:

The committee will be meeting monthly to review the investment policy for the COM-FSM as well as identifying a consultant to develop marketing video and brochures for the COM-FSM Endowment.

Some of the members of the Committee will be attending the APAFS Investment Conference in Manila , Philippines during the week of October 8-10, 2008.

President and Vice President for Instructional Affairs Receive Invitation to Zhejiang Ocean University

President James and Vice President for Instructional Affairs Thoulag were invited by Zhejiang Ocean University to attend its 50 th Year Anniversary on November 1, 2008 .

The two institutions recently entered into an agreement to continue to explore possible collaborations that may benefit both institutions. President James looks forward to the possibility of establishing exchanges of faculty, researchers, and students between these two institutions during the two COM-FSM officials’ visit to Zhejiang Ocean University . President James and Vice President Jean Thoulag will also be participating in forum discussions during their visit to Zhejiang Ocean University .
