College Board Approves Directives at Third Quarter meeting in Yap

The College of Micronesia – FSM Board of Regents carried out the following actions and directives at its third quarter meeting of August 27-30, 2009 in Yap :

  • Designated the College’s Nantaku property to be the permanent site for Chuuk Campus;
  • Approved the following supplemental budget requests for FY 2008:
    • Utilities                                          $247,000
    • Cafeteria Food Supplies                   63,000
    • Student Information System (SIS)     95,220
      Total--------------------------     $405,220;
  • Approved the College’s request to use of 50% of the income/earnings from the General Fund account invested at Citibank, or $64,886, as an additional funding source for supplemental budgets;
  • Approved changing the investment manager for small cap growth investment from Atlantic Capital Management to TWC Investment Management;
  • Directed the College President to provide Pohnpei State with the technical assistance requested for their World Park planning and to the other states and the national government should they also request assistance;
  • Directed the President to develop a plan to incorporate alternative energy into the college system and identify funding sources to implement the plan for the Board’s consideration;
  • Require all new college facilities to include provisions for alternative energy;
  • Approved Regents Graceful Enlet and Lyndon Cornelius to represent the Board on the college’s Investment Committee;
  • Adopted the minutes of the May 19-21, 2008 , regular meeting and the August 21, 2008 , teleconference meeting; and
  • Scheduled the next Board meeting to take place during the first week of December 2008 at the National Campus.

Board meets College community at Yap and FSM-FMI campuses

The Board of Regents for the College of Micronesia-FSM concluded its third quarter meeting in Yap with the usual meetings with the faculty, staff and students of Yap and FSM-FMI campuses. The Regents and the management team met with the Yap Campus Students on Friday, 9/29/08 , at 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Yap Campus and FSM-FMI students at FMI Campus on Saturday, 9/30/08 , at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. According to the President, Yap Campus students want more programs extended to Yap Campus especially the Third Year Program in Teacher Education. The idea of transforming the institution into a four-year college was also brought up by the students. The Board chair cited the availability of resources to be one of the major factors to consider when planning the future of the college.

The FSM-FMI Students decided not to ask any questions verbally but the opted to submit a list of things to the Chairman of the Board. The requests are now forwarded to the College President to address their concerns together with the FSM-FMI directors and the campus management team. The following are some of the requests made by the FSM-FMI students: computers for students use in the dorm, a van for students, and improving quality of food. The Regents and Management Team toured the FSM-FMI facilities and were impressed with the qualities of instructional equipment used for courses and programs there. Pohnpei Campus Dedicates New One Stop Student Services Center

Pohnpei Campus dedicated its one stop Student Services Center on Monday, September 8, 2008, with over 200 students, faculty, staff, friends, dignitaries from the US Government Representatives from Hawaii, USDA Rural Development Program Representatives in Pohnpei, cabinet, members, and supporters in attendance. President James, Director Penny Weilbacher, and Vice President Ringlen Ringlen thanked the USDA Rural Development Program for co-funding the one stop Student Services Center and also remarked on the importance of the Center on promoting the mission and goals of the College relating to “student learning centered institution”. Honorable Allen Hatcher, Assistant Administrator for Human Resources, National USDA Rural Development Office represented the US delegation and commented on the support provided by the College, especially Pohnpei Campus, on completing the project. The total cost of the project is about $197,000.00 and USDA Rural Development Program contributed about $37,000.00 to this very important project.

The one stop Student Services Center at Pohnpei Campus will be housing staff to provide services like student services coordination, financial aid, counseling, tutoring, recreation, and medical services.

SPREP holds Annual meeting at FSM-China Friendship Sports Center, National Campus

The FSM-China Friendship Sports Center was the venue for the 19 th Annual Meeting of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) during the week of September 4-12, 008. The program of events for this regional meeting included the following:

  • Thursday, September 4, 2008 Meeting of the Parties to the Noumea Convention
  • Friday, September 5, 2008 Meeting of the Parties to the Waigani Convention
  • Saturday, September 6, 2008 Open
