gettext: Installing Localizations

1
1 2.4 Installing Translations for Particular Programs
1 ===================================================
1
1 Languages are not equally well supported in all packages using GNU
1 ‘gettext’, and more translations are added over time. Usually, you use
1 the translations that are shipped with the operating system or with
1 particular packages that you install afterwards. But you can also
1 install newer localizations directly. For doing this, you will need an
1 understanding where each localization file is stored on the file system.
1
1 For programs that participate in the Translation Project, you can
1 start looking for translations here:
1 <http://translationproject.org/team/index.html>. A snapshot of this
1 information is also found in the ‘ABOUT-NLS’ file that is shipped with
1 GNU gettext.
1
1 For programs that are part of the KDE project, the starting point is:
1 <http://i18n.kde.org/>.
1
1 For programs that are part of the GNOME project, the starting point
1 is: <http://www.gnome.org/i18n/>.
1
1 For other programs, you may check whether the program’s source code
1 package contains some ‘LL.po’ files; often they are kept together in a
1 directory called ‘po/’. Each ‘LL.po’ file contains the message
1 translations for the language whose abbreviation of LL.
