UB PreJunior Midterm Summer 2003 • Name: __________

The following table records the results of an experiment done by the SC 120 Biology students at the COM-FSM Palikir campus. The students were studying the rate of respiration for yeast and how the rate varies with temperature. The students measured the rate of respiration by placing the yeast in a sugar and water solution at a fixed temperature and then counting the number of CO2(carbon dioxide) bubbles produced per minute by the yeast. The students repeated the experiment for other temperatures.

Temperature/Celsius CO2
bubbles/minute
19 0.6
28 2.9
29 4.3
34 15.7
39 21.3
  1. Make an XY Scatter graph of the data.
  2. Find the best fit line (trendline, linear regression)
  3. Write down the equation of the best fit line:
    ___________________________________
  4. Based on the equation of the best fit line, what would be the predicted bubble rate at 24 Celsius? ________
  5. Based on the inverse of the equation of the best fit line, what would be the predicted temperature for a bubble rate of 10 bubbles per minute? _________
