15 October Food Presentations Essay question prompt: In ancient times men and women worked together to survive in these islands. Men fished, climbed breadfruit, coconut trees, and, on the high islands, tended to the uhm. Men and women depended on each other for survival of the family. In modern times food comes from a store in exchange for green pieces of paper. Women are no longer dependent on men for survival. Fish, breadfruit, coconuts, and more can be bought in the markets and stores. Women can hold jobs with salaries that allow women to survive independent of men. The position that men held and their importance to the survival of the family has eroded.

Even as Ms. Mwarike shared her traditional food, túsolá, her t-shirt silently spoke to the tensions within the family that these changes have brought. Her shirt is from a white ribbon campaign against domestic violence. The white ribbon campaign was started by Australian men and is a movement aimed at men because the violence is men physically hurting the women they are supposed to love and protect. Unable to exert control over the food supply upon which their women used to depend, some men attempt to retain control through physical violence. Women, who were once protected by nearby brothers and relatives, are now often far from the protection of their family, leaving them all the more vulnerable.

Although there are laws that protect all people including women against violence in the FSM, cultural factors tend to result in a culture of silence when the man and the woman are married to each other. Family members are not likely to report a violent brother, father, or son. Law enforcement alone is not going to protect women.

Write an essay on this topic using grammatically correct complete sentences. Write a well developed essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

What solutions can you propose to eliminate violence against women? Are those proposed solutions culturally sensitive? Are those proposed solutions culturally realistic?
