Culture

If one was to talk about today's culture in the FSM, one can say that there have been a lot of changes since our ancestors first migrated to the islands. These changes can be categorized as good or bad; positive or negative to the lives of the Micronesian people. No matter how one sees these changes, they have occurred and because they are now defined as part of today's culture (way of living), islanders must live with them. Cultural changes occurred when the first Explorers came to islands introduced such material goods as metal, tobacco, liquors, and cotton fabrics. From the Explorers came the missionaries who brought religion and a different way of thinking. From the colonial powers of the Spaniards, Germans, Japanese, and the Americans, the islands' political structures changed with the existing colonial administration. The list goes on to what and how the FSM islands' culture have changed, however, for the purpose of this site, we will explore things that were introduced to the islands by the Spaniards and how they have evolved into today's existing culture.
