Mabuhay!

This website was conceived to benefit students who are currently enrolled in the courses that I teach at COM-FSM.

It is a venue where I provide course information such as syllabi, study guides, course outlines and even class activities and assignments so these are readily accessible anywhere, anytime.  Other online tools included will also serve as alternative learning resources for students.

Class grades are updated regularly so students know their class performance and standing without the feeling of embarrassment.

Individual student projects are also uploaded here so students' outputs can be viewed.  A photo gallery features class activities. This acts as a showcase of their active involvement in the courses.

My personal information and teaching philosophy are also featured so students will know me more and can relate to me better in the classroom.

It is hoped that these will all be helpful in motivating the students achieve commendable performance.

About Me

Marlene was in the pioneer batch of the Bachelor in Computer Data Processing Management at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 1982. She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation, Philippines, and is presently pursuing her doctorate in Business Administration.

After working for some insurance companies in Manila, she decided to pursue her career in her home province. From then on, she served as a computer instructor to various colleges and universities of Pangasinan, Philippines such as Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation, Philippine College of Science and Technology, STI College and the Pangasinan State University, both to undergraduate and graduate levels. Her passion to fashion led her to be working in a garment factory where she was assigned as an operations manager. A lighter side of her reveals her interests to ornamental plants as she ventured in collecting cacti and succulents and coleus, that became popular in her home province on account of her initiatives. When she became Chair of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department of the Pangasinan State University, she initiated some state of the art projects such as the implementation of various computerized systems in the university and the establishments of a Cyber Center and e-Learning Center that prepared the students to be globally competitive. She also initiated the enhancement of the curriculum of the ICT program to keep it at pace with the present needs of the ICT Industry. She also served as a member of the Bids and Awards Committee in its e-procurement system.

With so many years in a supervisory job, she still relishes the idea of slowing down and be on the frontline once again in imparting her expertise and knowledge to students. So when an opportunity came for her to realize her wish, she didn't have second thoughts and got into the College of Micronesia - FSM. She now enjoys her position as a part of the teaching force at the Business Division and at the same time, takes pleasure in an island lifestyle apart from the usual hectic schedules and day-to-day worries. She enjoys Pohnpei a lot with her family, and incidentally, her husband, George Mangonon, is a Mathematics Instructor at COM-FSM Pohnpei Campus.

My Philosophy of Teaching

When I teach, I give my heart into it and I want my students to do the same. I want them to give their 100% attention to what I lecture. I subscribe to the Bible passage at Luke 6:40 which says, "A student is not above his teacher, but if he is properly instructed, he will be like his teacher", and so I always work toward the goal of teaching my students all the things that they ought to learn in a course.   I endeavor to make them proficient in the course so they could readily apply the knowledge they obtained once they finish it.

I believe that inside the classroom, there should exist respect between the teacher and the students, and there should always be a demarcation line.  However, this could not mean that the classroom atmosphere must be strictly formal.  The teacher should design his presentation in such a way that the interests of the students are sustained all throughout the duration of the class, and they will eagerly look forward for the next class sessions.  But discipline should be maintained so that the focus of everyone is not disrupted.
