coffee plant In 1992 the Community College of Micronesia had a coffee club that provided coffee for faculty and staff. With the move to Palikir in 1996 the coffee club ceased to exist. For a few years I kept a one cup coffee maker in my office for my morning coffee. When I became chair of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics I acquired a 12 cup drip coffee maker and put the coffee maker in my office in what was then office F105. The coffee pot was a management and assessment tool. Faculty were coffee drinkers and would stop by to get their free morning coffee. This let me know the faculty member was in and gave me a chance to chat with the faculty member. Through those morning chats I was able to keep "my finger on the pulse" of the division. With the move to the south faculty building in 2003 I no longer had a place to put the coffee maker. So the coffee maker transferred, logically, to the faculty and staff lunch room. Morning coffee continues to be available to division faculty. Coffee is being grown here on Pohnpei in small quantities which is sold primarily to tourists at prices above the price points of imported coffee. A recent BBC program noted that Vietnam has become the number two supplier of coffee on the planet, but at a high environmental cost.
