When an object is underwater or under glass, the object appears closer. The actual distance to the object is called the object depth δ in this laboratory. Measure all distances from the top surface of the water or the glass. The apparent distance to the image of the object under the water or glass is termed the image depth ί in this laboratory. To accurately determine the image depth you may have to move your eye above the object.
Think about the mirror laboratory where you were measuring the distance to the imaginary image in the mirror. In this lab you are measuring the distance to the position of the image of the object either under water or under glass.
Measure the image depth ί and object depth δ for the object under the water. Make measurements at many different depths. Run an mathematical analysis on the results, producing the appropriate graphs and mathematical relations.
Image depth ί (cm) | object depth δ (cm) |
---|---|
Measure the image depth ί and object depth δ for the object under the glass. Make measurements for many different depths. Layer the louver panes to create different "depths." Run an mathematical analysis on the results, producing the appropriate graphs and mathematical relations.
Image depth ί (cm) | object depth δ (cm) |
---|---|
The variables in this laboratory are the image depth ί and the object depth δ. You decide how to determine if there is a mathematical relationship between the variables. If you find a mathematical relationship, you use the most appropriate method for calculating and reporting that relationship. You decide what should be the report and how the data should be presented and analyzed. Discuss also whether the two parts, water and glass, are the same or different. You are scientists trying to determine what the relationships might be, if any relationships exist. You are producing the report on your findings.
Due next Thursday, no late turn-in!
Next Thursday: The three body problem. Parabolic orbitals for four gravitationally bound objects where m♁ > > m1, m3, m3. Bring three balls. Maybe some food. Or drink.
