Monthly Report September 2001

Statistics

An informal anonymous survey of 18 students in MS 150 Statistics found that at least once a month:

Of the beer drinkers, 42% reported drinking more than once a week. Among the hard liquor drinkers, 36% report consumption more than once a week.

Clearly it is time to tap this revenue stream by opening a campus pub. An early goal should be to move the students from a high quantity-low quality consumption mode to low quantity-high quality mode. A selection of fine German beers along with American specialty brands could be stocked by the pub. Profits would be plowed back into the endowment fund.

Programs

The developmental math program will be requesting an additional instructor for FY 2003 based on demand for these courses.

No further progress on redesign of the LA/NU program can be reported at this time. Understanding how to preserve some of the hard won articulation agreements is a present concern of the chair. The redesign is necessary but ought to remain comprehensible in terms of existing articulation agreements.

No information on computer based placement testing for math has been received.

The process of hiring a Marine Science instructor to replace Brian Lynch is continuing.
