| 1.1 a. To promote awareness of the necessity of regular exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle | 250 | All students will be conscious of the need for regular physical exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle | Ten students completed a physical education course Fall 2002. All ten students completed the required student learning outcomes. 101 students completed health science courses on two campuses according to records available on 10 January 2003. 71 of the students in health science completed the course successfully. The current status is yet to be determined. Three students have signed up for physical education Spring 2003 as of 13 January 2003. During the past three months the board of regents approved the addition of a one credit physical education course requirement to the general education requirements. This brings the general education total to 29 credit hours. It is my understanding that the board also approved the budget for a physical education instructor FY 2004. |

Implementation Problems: Describe implementation problems encountered, if any, during the past quarter, and describe their resolution.
The projection of 250 students in physical education courses is for FY 2004 when PE will be a part of the general education core requirements.
The low numbers enrolled in physical education Spring 2003, or kinesiology, reflect in part the adjustment of the credits from three to one, a necessary prerequisite to adding kinesiology to the general education core. This also aligns the PE courses with an existing education requirement for a single credit PE course. The requirement for students to take PE will not invoke until Fall 2003 and then it will invoke only on new freshmen. Hence this term the course is not attractive as an open elective (it offers only a single credit, students need three credit courses) and it is not a requirement. The expectation was that demand for the course would be low for this single term. The actual enrollment will be assessed tomorrow. If enrollment falls short of that required to run the course, a request will be made to run the course under the auspices of the College's independent study policy. This would permit the College to continue to offer this program and prevent an interuption in the program during this term.
Priorities and Plans: List the Division/Unit's highest priorities for the next three to six months (with respect to the activity/outputs listed above), and the expected resources required to carry them out.
The priorities for the next three to six months include advertising to hire a physical education faculty member for FY 2004. The unit will also seek to work with the new director of sports activities and recreation, a student services position, to lay the groundwork for the future relationship of academic physical education to recreational and intramural offerings.
The program also needs to settle on a final set of program student learning outcomes. The program currently uses the outcomes seen above. The following is a proposed alternate set of outcomes that are utilized by course outlines in the unit:
| Institutional Outcome | Program Outcome | Course Outcomes | Present Status | Recommendation | Projected result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. To promote student health through developing habits of regular physical exercise [Current form in strategic plan. Should be rewritten into student learning outcome format: Students will develop habits of regular physical exercise] | Students will participate regularly in physical activity | Provided in individual course outlines | |||
| Students will learn skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities | |||||
| Students will value physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle | |||||
| Students will determine baseline measures of personal fitness. | |||||
| Students will be able to identify common injuries, treatment, and preventative measures. | |||||
| Students will have an opportunity to experience the joys of aerobic exercise: the feelings of strength, energy, and stress release. |
