STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

General 

To equip the seafarers in the maritime industry with practical skills and competence in shipboard operations consistent with their duties on merchant vessels and fishing vessels. To enable mariners to adapt with confidence to the demands and opportunities of a team approach to shipboard operations. To provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to:

- work safely
- interact positively with others on board merchant and small commercial vessels.

Specific 

Students should be able to:

1. Outline emergency response organization, emergency procedures, escape routes, and requirements for on board training on ships.
2.
Take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment.
3.
Observe safe shipboard working practices.
4.
Effectively communicate with shipboard personnel regarding shipboard duties.
5.
Contribute effectively to human relationships in the shipboard environment.
6.
Describe the signs, symptoms and modes of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including causes, symptoms and treatments.
7. Describe the major features of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
8. Describe behaviors that put people at risk for HIV and STD infection, and discuss safe sex practices.
