Course Title: Basic Radar Operations

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

General

In addition to meeting COM-FSM’s Certificate of Achievement criteria, this course is targeted at students and mariners who wish to obtain a Certificate of Competency as Master Grade 6 in accordance with the South Pacific Maritime Code. This course covers part of the syllabus requirements as described in the code and on successful completion of this course the student will be able to operate radar installations on board fishing and merchant vessels.

Specific

Students will be able to:

1. Describe the basic principles of operation of radar set used in small craft.
2.
Describe the factors that affect detection and presentation of a target on a radar display.
3.
Set up and maintain the picture on a radar set typical of the type installed on small commercial vessels.
4.
Interpret a radar display.
5.
Use radar as an aid to navigation.
6.
Apply the information obtained by radar for collision avoidance.
