STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

General

In order to achieve academically in content areas, students will develop appropriate strategies to process written materials and apply this knowledge in a wider context. Students will learn to approach academic reading as a three-stage process that includes pre-reading, reading, and post-reading strategies that maximize comprehension and retention of content.

Specific

Pre-reading Skills

    Students will improve their ability to:
        1. Preview or survey academic materials to discover topic, key ideas, and thematic vocabulary
        2. Activate prior knowledge and/or develop new background knowledge in order to improve comprehension of content

Reading Skills

    Students will improve their ability to:
        1. Find the main idea in academic content based materials
        2. Read critically in order to detect implied ideas and make inferences about the text
        3. Draw conclusions from academic reading passages
        4. Develop skimming and scanning skills
        5. Use contextual clues and decoding skills to deduce vocabulary meanings
   
    In addition, students will:
        1. Expand background knowledge in content areas through thematic reading
        2. Develop thematic vocabulary through reading passages in content areas

Post-reading (reviewing) Skills

    Students will improve their ability to:
        1. Rephrase, explain, and expand on written information to reflect comprehension
        2. Actively connect new information to information previously learned
        3. Summarize or paraphrase main ideas and important details in source material
        4.
Synthesize information from what has been read by relating new information to prior knowledge, experience, interests, and opinions
