Course Title: Writings on 19th Century Pohnpei

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

General

To improve student's awareness of contemporary Pohnpei by studying writing about the Early Contact Period. To study writing by prominent non-fiction authors who wrote about 19th Century Pohnpei. To increase students vocabulary and English comprehension skills.

Specific

1.
Students will increase their vocabularies and comprehension skills.
2. Students will study styles and basic elements of non-fiction English prose of the 19th Century.
3. Students will read, study, and analyze selections by noted authors of non-fiction about Pohnpei.
4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the cultural context of 9th; Century Pohnpei as illustrated in
    writing.
5. Students will learn to differentiate between fact and fiction in 19th Century prose writing.
6. Students will demonstrate increased understanding of the Protestant-Catholic conflict on Pohnpei as illustrated by
   prominent authors.
7. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of relevant biographical data about authors, characters,
   and historical figures depicted in the writing.
