VOCATIONAL MECHANICS COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

MME 160 Nautical Knowledge I

Prerequisites: Safety Certificate

To provide the student with the knowledge and skills required managing and operating a vessel of less than 20 gross tons within inshore waters.

  

MME 161 Engineering Knowledge I

Prerequisites: Safety Certificate

To provide the student with the knowledge and skills to safely operate a propulsion plant and other auxiliary equipment on a vessel not exceeding 250 kW propulsion power.

 

MME 162 Basic Radar Operations

Prerequisites: Safety Certificate

To develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enable the student to be able to operate radar installations on board fishing and merchant vessels.

 

MME 163 Radio Telephony

Prerequisites: Safety Certificate

To provide the student with the knowledge and skills required to: use correct radiotelephone operating procedures particularly those relating to distress, urgency and safety messages; operate the controls of marine radio equipment to ensure maximum performance; conduct routine maintenance required to keep radio equipment in good working order and to repair simple faults; and operate radio equipment in accordance with regulations applicable to radiotelephone ship stations

 

MME 180 Engineering Knowledge II

Prerequisites: Nil

To provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to safely operate and maintain the propulsion plant and auxiliary equipment on a vessel not exceeding 500 kW propulsion power.

 

MME 181 Applied Marine Machinery

Prerequisites: Class 6 EK I

To enhance the knowledge by providing the necessary skills the students will require to be able to operate the propulsion plant of not over 500 kW, as well as the auxiliary engines and deck machineries of a ship. The skills would include the proper operation of refrigeration units, milling machines for precision parts for engines and machineries, electrical works as well as repairs, maintenance and operation of outboard motors, valves and pumping arrangements. This course is in line with the requirements of the International Convention on the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended (STCW Convention).

  

MME 200 Vessel Administration

Prerequisites: Nil

This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills required to manage compliance with legislative requirements concerning the operation of a vessel.
