ECE 100 Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3)

Provides foundation and framework of early childhood programs, historical roots, philosophical issues, program models, roles of teachers and other professionals, assessments, curriculum development, and other key issues relating to early childhood education.

 

ECE 101 Curriculum for Early Childhood Education (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

Assists care giver in helping children to become independent, creative individuals. It provides the students with the building blocks for designing a comprehensive curriculum that stresses development learning for preschool children. Students learn the importance of play, the value of behavioral objectives, and understand the need for careful scheduling of activities.

 

ECE 102 Working with Children with Special Needs (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

Provides students with knowledge and understanding about children with exceptional speed and the slower ones in the classroom. This course will help students to be sensitive to the needs of both the children with exceptional speed and the slower ones. This course will help students develop teaching strategies for and understand the needs of children with physical, emotional and developmental challenges and other special needs.

 

ECE 110 The Child, Family, and Community (3)

Prerequisites: ECE 100

Stresses the importance of communication between the early childhood teacher and the family and community. Communication between teacher and the home and community is an important cornerstone for a child's progress. Students explore the interrelationship between the family, school, and community.

 

ECE 111 Child Abuse and Neglect (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

The course provides information on reported and unreported cases of abuse and neglect in Micronesia and elsewhere. Provides training for students in identifying, treating and preventing abuse of at-risk children. After completing this course, students will be better prepared to recognize and properly report this tragic problem. Provides students with understanding of the emotional consequences on the child, parent and care giver.

 

ECE 211 Language Development in Young Children (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

This course is designed to develop students competencies needed to plan and implement strategies for teaching language skills to young children. They will explore the various stages of language development in young children.

 

ECE 212 Developing Math Skills in Young Children (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

Provides students with teaching strategies for planning and implementing a math curriculum and evaluating the progress of students in the classroom.

 

ECE 213 Infant and Toddler Care (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

The course is designed to teach students how to create a safe, healthy, learning environment that helps infants and toddlers increase their physical, intellectual and social qualities. Students will be involved in promoting self-esteem and good communication.

 

ECE 214 Nutrition, Health & Safety (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

This course helps students develop and maintain a healthy and accident-free environment. Responsibility for a child does not end with lesson plans and general care.

 

ECE 215 Internship in Early Childhood Education (4)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

This course provides students with supervised work experience in an early childhood education facility under the direction of a qualified child care professional. At the end of the course, the students will be able to demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency as ECE educators.
