Palikir, Pohnpei (December 16, 2013) – Fundraising efforts were conducted at the college for the victims of typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines. Spearheaded by college Comptroller Danny Dumantay, t-shirts with the printed message “Together we are STRONGER than typhoon Haiyan” were sold for $12.00.

Cash donations were also given by numerous members of the college community to support the victims. A total of $670.00 was collected during the 2-week campaign.

Orders for the popular fundraising shirts reached as far as the state of Yap and Kosrae.

The total amount collected was turned over to the Philippine Honorary Consul Dr. Merlynn Abello-Alfonso by College President Joseph Daisy, Ed.D., Danny Dumantay and Juan Paulo Santos on December 13, 2013.

“We were all overwhelmed with the support, any assistance is very much appreciated and will go a long way” said Dr. Alfonso. Further adding that “it’s amazing how everybody worked together as one to raise funds for the victims.”

President Daisy expressed  that he “was particularly touched later to learn that internally at the college there was an effort to raise funds for the victims.”  Noting that “It was a clever fundraising effort, it was inspiring, it got people involved, the t-shirts sends a valuable message to the community.“

Typhoon Haiyan devastated the southern Philippines in early November of this year killing more than 6,000 people and leaving thousands homeless.  Haiyan is recorded as the strongest storm ever to make landfall. Haiyan originated from an area of low pressure several hundred kilometers east-southeast of Pohnpei.

If you would like to buy a shirt and contribute to this fundraising effort you may contact  Juan Paulo Santos at (691) 320-2480 extension 189.
