National Campus Hosts EducationUSA College Fair 2013
PALIKIR, Pohnpei (September 23, 2013) – College of Micronesia-FSM National Campus hosted EducationUSA’s fourth annual College fair on September 20, 2013 at the FSM-China Friendship Sports Center Practice Gym.
The welcoming remarks was given by Joseph M. Daisy Ed.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of COM-FSM, followed by a message on the importance of education by Her Excellency Dorothea “Doria” Rosen, U.S. Ambassador to the FSM.
The keynote message was given by Universe Yamase, COM-FSM Chief of Staff. She shared her experiences as a working student in Hawaii and how she was able to work her self through a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. “I am standing here today to encourage you and say you are just as capable as me and many other individuals in this room who have finished college. I am standing here as proof that you will be able to complete your college degree at any college whether it is a 4 year or 2 year institution.” she said. “Persistence, hard work and determination were my only options. It all depended on me.” she added.
She also shared that her formula for success while she was in college was to get good grades to be able to qualify for scholarships.
More than 15 universities and colleges from the United States participated in the fair including various programs such as the FSM Scholarship Program, Pohnpei State Scholarship Program, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). COM-FSM programs represented at the fair was Public Health and Nursing Program, and Financial Aid Office.
There were about 500 participants including senior students, teachers, school principals, councilors, and members of the COM-FSM community.
Participating High Schools during the fair were Nanpei Memorial High School, Madolenihmw High School, PICS High School, Seventh-Day Adventist High School (SDA), Calvary Christian Academy (CCA), and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School.
