Kosrae Campus Installs Solar Powered Charging Station

(Tofol, Kosrae) -- Kosrae Campus in colaboration with Caribbean and Pacific Consortium (CARIPAC) successfully installed a solar powered charging station. Dr. Bruce Best of University of Guam and VPCRE Jim Currie of COM-FSM agreed to allow the solar power circuit to power the satellite dish modem. This configuration allows the two apparatuses to run independently of the island power and FSM telecommunication system.

The solar panel will serve as back up power during emergencies when the island power is down and the college network is not operational. The primary purpose of the solar power circuit is providing a laptop charging station for students.  A few days after it was publicly announced, students began to power-charge their laptops and cellphones at the solar powered charging station (BlueBox).

The campus dean asked that students use the BlueBox so that Kosrae Campus can “save energy and reduce electric bills.”  Some students are reluctant to use the BlueBox because they are afraid of losing their laptops when stepping out of the charge area.

For this reason, everyone is asked to respect the property of others and to nurture a culture of cooperation and honesty. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincerest appreciation to CARIPAC for these and other services that directly benefit students at Kosrae Campus.
