The Participants

The Experiences

Japan commemorates the Atomic bombings of world war ll with annual memorial services. On August 6, Hiroshima holds a peace memorial ceremony. The events honor the victims, and promote international peace, serving as a reminder of the devastating effects of the atomic bombings. The A-Bomb Dome, a haunting yet resilient structure withstood the destructive force unleashed upon Hiroshima. This symbolizes Hiroshima’s unwavering spirit and determination to rebuild amidst adversity.

The Exchanges

Our exploration took us through the city’s history, culture, and the powerful symbolism of peace-building. During our time in Hiroshima, we delved into the recent events surrounding the G7 and the PALMS summit. It was interesting that the G7 leaders, the majority of who are nuclear weapon states, chose not to enter the Hiroshima museum,
given that they have a direct hand in global decision-making. This decision adds layers to our understanding of global dynamics. The PALMS summit, on the other hand, provided insights into the diplomatic relationships surrounding the Micronesian region and the Pacific as a whole.

The Daigo Fukuryu Maru ship shows us just how scary the radiation is, even though it was some distance away from the Marshall Islands during nuclear testing. We were told the fish in the wooden boat also got radiated, showing how much, we do not know the dangers of the boat explosion.

The Host – Family

Our host families in Japan were exceptionally kind and thoughtful. Despite the language barrier, as they spoke limited English, they went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and understanding.

They patiently explained everything clearly, making sure we felt at home. Their warmth and consideration made communication effortless, and we connected beautifully, we are truly grateful for their hospitality and warmth during our stay in Japan. (January 16-24)
