Fiber Optics Installer (FOI) Certification by Electronic Technician Association – International (ETA-I)
[Kolonia, Pohnpei] – Fourteen students have successfully completed the rigorous requirements to become certified Standalone Fiber Optics Installers. The students enrolled in VTE261 Fiber Optic Installation, a core course within the Telecommunication program, achieved this milestone in the Spring 2024 semester.
VTE261, approved by ETA-I on May 9, 2023, provides comprehensive training in electronics and fiber optics technologies. The course curriculum includes both theoretical and hands-on components, preparing students for the demanding challenges of the field.
Upon completion, graduates have demonstrated proficiency in:
- Optical fiber installation, connectorization, splicing, and testing
- Adherence to TIA, ITU-T, and Telecordia standards for fiber, connector, and splice performance
- Connector end-face evaluation according to TIA standards
- Optical loss testing utilizing light source power meters and OTDRs as outlined by TIA standards
- Compliance with NEC regulations for fiber optics installation
- Installation of connectors on various fiber optic cable types, employing different epoxies, and executing both mechanical and fusion splicing.
This achievement marks a significant step forward for these students as they embark on their careers in the telecommunications industry.
