Yap Campus CRE Hosts Successful Poultry Farming Workshop
The College of Micronesia-FSM Yap Campus Cooperative Research and Extension (CRE) Program successfully conducted a comprehensive three-day training workshop on poultry farming for egg production from May 22 to May 24. The workshop, aimed at empowering community members with essential knowledge and skills, was facilitated by Vice President CRE Steven Young-Uhk and CRE Coordinator Mark Googag.
The training workshop covered various topics crucial for practical poultry farming. Participants gained insights into optimal egg production, creating suitable housing and environments for poultry, and essential nutrition and feeding practices. Health management was a key focus, addressing common diseases and preventive measures. Additionally, practical sessions on egg collection and handling, hatching techniques, and economic considerations gave participants a holistic understanding of poultry farming.
The introduction of the poultry program marks a new extension activity initiated by CRE this year. This program is set to be implemented across all four state campuses, reflecting the College of Micronesia-FSM's commitment to enhancing agricultural practices and supporting local communities.
"We are excited to launch this program and see such strong community participation,” said Young-Uhk. “We aim to empower communities with poultry farming skills, fostering food security and economic development. This workshop is the first step, and we’ll extend support to all states.”
The workshop was evaluated by pre and post-tests. All successful attendees received certificates of participation and achievement. The workshop participants expressed their gratitude and excitement about the new skills and knowledge they acquired. With the CRE program's ongoing support, they are optimistic about the future of poultry farming in their communities.
