On Monday, Feb 28, three cabinet members from the FSM Government visited the Yap CRE demonstration garden. Secretary Elina Akinaga, Secretary Andrew Yatilman, and Secretary Eugene Amor were among a delegation accompanying the FSM President David Panuelo during his first state visit after assuming office. These officials took a short break from their busy schedule to experience the sustainable vegetable gardening techniques appropriate to local areas. Dr. Muru Krishnapillai, CRE Researcher, gave the visitors a tour through the demonstration garden, pointing out and explaining various vegetable production systems and how these vegetables are crucial to food and nutrition security. “I love growing and enjoying fresh veggies,” said Andrew Yatilman. Vegetable gardening improves health by providing contact with nature, physical activity, and a healthier diet. “Why can’t we replicate these methods in Pohnpei,” asked Elina.

Yap CRE vegetable demonstration garden is a living classroom for agriculture extension education. Yap CRE cultivates healthy communities through various outreach activities involving climate-smart food production systems and low-cost urban vegetable garden models.
