COM-FSM Online
By: Bob Hogan, Distance Education Consultant
Last February, a select group of pioneer instructors began the first step in spreading online throughout Micronesia. The goal to make COM-FSM online is to make education more accessible. Once online is in place, it is no longer important which FSM state a student lives. Online courses will assist students to graduate in less time, spend less time away from home, and find jobs sooner.
How does online work? —Just fine. Is it appropriate for the Micronesian culture—Most assuredly. What about student isolation? Online students are more connected to their instructor than in almost face-to-face class. Yes, but how can a student take a course online in places where the lights often go out due to electricity cuts? Simple, go fishing or out with friends. When the electricity is back on, start your class.
What’s next? Following their training, the instructors will build their online courses. Then the college will start slowly. It will test to ensure any problems are fixed before the class begins.
Some people may ask, “Why is the college starting online learning now.†The answer is that in today’s global economy, online learning will be Micronesia’s key to social and economic security for workers, businesses, and the nation.
Editor's Note: The College of Micronesia-FSM has no plans to start a full pledged distance education program until it receives the endorsement of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
