President's Message to the Community

December 22, 2015

COM-FSM Mission Statement:

The College of Micronesia-FSM is a learner-centered institution of higher education that is committed to the success of the Federated States of Micronesia by providing academic, career and technical education programs characterized by continuous improvement and best practices.

Dear Colleagues and Fellow Members of the COM-FSM Community,

Season’s Greetings! Thank you for all of your work, effort and dedication this year in service to the students we serve. Each of us plays an important role in the successful implementation of the mission of COM-FSM. Together, let us look forward to the challenges and opportunities we will surely face in 2016. Given how well we have all come together, how well we communicate with each other, and our shared purpose to secure the future for COM-FSM and our students, we can only grow stronger.

On November 23, 2015, the college announced the appointment of Vice Presidents for Instructional Affairs, and Enrollment Management and Student Services. Applications for the positions were accepted through July 2, 2015. Search committees formed and worked over the course of three months after which recommendations were submitted to the president for his consideration. The president approved the recommendations on October 15, 2015, and the appointments became effective on November 5, 2015.

Important events were held last week:

On December 14, 2015, the Board of Regents Community meeting was held at the Student Services Center located at the Career and Technical Education Center at 3:00PM. The COM-FSM board holds community meetings in the host state whenever it meets to dialogue with the community by sharing information about the college, gathering feedback, listening to concerns, and answering questions. Parents, CCM and COM-FSM alumni, employers of our graduates, government, church, community, business, and NGO leaders, and anyone interested were encouraged to attend the community meeting.

On December 15, 2015, the Board of Regents came together to hold its quarterly meeting at the Career and Technical Education Center.

On December 16, 2015, the Vice President for Administrative Services and staff organized and facilitated the Faculty/Staff Holiday Party for both the Career and Technical Education Center and National Campus.

On December 17, 2015, the college held its 62nd Commencement at the FSM-China Friendship Sports Center graduating approximately 200 students under the third-year certificate, associate degree, and certificate of achievement program. Four FSM students under the University of Guam’s Master of Education in Reading, and five students under the UOG and COM-FSM Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education partnership program graduated at this year’s commencement. The theme chosen for the Fall 2015 graduating class was Nil Desperandum (Never Give Up). His Excellency Peter M. Christian participated as the 62n Commencement Exercise commencement speaker.

It is a privilege for me to serve you as president.

Please accept my wishes for a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year.

Happy Holidays,

Joe
