President's Monthly Message

Dear Colleagues and Fellow Members of the COM-FSM Community,

Accreditation Update: The college faculty, staff and administration have been working on writing accreditation Standard draft reports for the past few months. Consultants have met with accreditation standard teams to help provide guidance and technical support with the accreditation self-evaluation report. The accreditation Standard teams will submit drafts on July 15, 2015, to Frankie Harriss, VPIEQA/ALO.

A team will attend the Regional Workshop on Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment,  July 14-15, 2015, by ACCJC in Hawaii.

Events: On June 10, 2015, Chairman Edward, Regent Mida, president and cabinet met with Esther Kia'aina, Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs in the US Department of Interior during which s we discussed our comprehensive facilities master plan and our request to the FSM national government for funding. The Assistant Secretary pledged her support, understanding there are competing demands for resources and issues of equity to be considered

On June 25, 2015, the college’s Micronesian Studies Program is hosting the FSM Congress At-Large seat forum for the Pohnpei candidates. The forum will be held at the FSM-China Friendship Sports Center, Practice Gym at 12pm-2pm. The forum is open and free to the public.

On July 1, 2015, Globe to Globe Hamlet will perform Hamlet at the FSM-China Friendship Sports Center. The Globe to Globe Hamlet has performed in over 100 countries across the Americas, Europe and Africa to more than 89,000 people, with over half of the whole tour now complete. The performance is open and free to the public.

Fall Schedule for Registration and Orientation: New student registration: August 3, Orientation: August 3-7, Regular Registration & Add/Drop: August 11-19, 2015.

From Vice President for Administrative Services: The audit report is due from Delloitte and Touche, LLP in June 2015. It will be ready for submission to the U.S. Department of Education as required by federal grants that the college receive from the U.S. Department units are completing the non-academic program evaluations to be ready for VPS’ review.

From Vice President for Cooperative Research Extension: VPCRE represented the college at the US Insular Areas climate change conference in Guam on June 4-5, 2015. Currently, Dr. Muru is attending the 28th Pacific Islands Environment Conference in American Samoa from June 16-18, 2015. Dr. Murukesan and Dr. Virhendra Verma conducted training in Climate Smart Agriculture in Marshall Islands, Chuuk and Palau during this period.  The training program was funded through Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (WSARE) program.

Pohnpei Cooperative Research and Extension service is currently involved in finding plant materials to send to Chuuk to support recovery from Typhoon Maysak to assist with food security concerns.

From Vice President for Instructional Affairs: The college is piloting specific courses for high school graduates to begin developmental course work later in the summer session, to be ready for college level courses in the fall.

From Vice President for Student Services: Registration for summer 2015 is 1,073 head counts with 5,611.5 credits (935 FTE students). The college registered 87.24% of summer 2015 head count projection, and 88.08% of summer 2015 projected credits/FTE students. CTEC-Pohnpei and Kosrae Campus surpassed their summer 2015 projections in both head counts and registered credits/FTEs. Compared with summer 2014, head count enrollment and credits/FTEs increased by 7.52% (75 head counts) and 9.69% (495.5 credits/83 FTEs).

Board of Regents’ Meeting: The Board of Regents’ meeting will be held on August 6-7, 2015. The meeting will be held on Pohnpei State.

Governance Summit: August 4-5, 2015, Governance Summit is rescheduled to January 2016. The college will use August 4-5, 2015, for additional work on accreditation draft reports.

Foundations of Excellence: A meeting of VPIA Karen Simion, VPSS Joey Oducado, Chief of Staff Universe Yamase, and faculty member Dana Lee Ling on June 16, 2015, focused on the first year and transfer experience continued to develop the plan for the Foundations of Excellence effort during this coming academic year. A launch of the fall Foundation working groups is set for 2:00 P.M. on Monday, August 3, 2015, at MITC. The launch event invites all faculty, staff, and students to join.
