The Hardware Support Specialist is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing computer hardware, peripherals, and network-related equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability. This position will provide technical support to faculty, staff, and students, assisting with installations, upgrades, and hardware-related issues across all COM-FSM campuses.
Reporting to the IT Director, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Hardware Maintenance & Support:
- Diagnose and repair desktop computers, laptops, printers, and other IT hardware.
- Maintain and troubleshoot networking hardware such as switches, routers, and wireless access points.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on IT equipment to minimize downtime.
- Installation & Configuration:
- Set up and configure new IT hardware, ensuring compatibility with existing systems.
- Install and upgrade system components, including memory, storage, and peripherals.
- Ensure proper cabling and connections for network devices.
- Technical Support & Troubleshooting:
- Respond to hardware-related support requests and resolve issues promptly.
- Provide assistance to end-users experiencing hardware malfunctions.
- Maintain detailed records of hardware issues and resolutions.
- Inventory & Asset Management:
- Track IT hardware assets and maintain inventory records.
- Assist in the procurement of new equipment and disposal of obsolete hardware.
- Security & Compliance:
- Ensure IT hardware security by implementing best practices for device protection.
- Work with IT staff to support data recovery efforts in case of hardware failure.
- Assist in compliance with institutional and industry IT policies.
- Collaboration & Training:
- Work closely with the IT team to support infrastructure projects.
- Provide training and guidance to users on best practices for hardware maintenance.
- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to IT planning efforts.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in IT hardware support, repair, and troubleshooting.
- Strong knowledge of computer hardware components, operating systems, and peripheral devices.
- Experience with network troubleshooting and hardware configurations.
- Familiarity with IT asset management and inventory tracking.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Certifications such as CompTIA A+ or equivalent are a plus.
- May require lifting and transporting IT equipment.
- Occasional travel to other COM-FSM campuses for hardware support.
- Work may include occasional evenings or weekends for system maintenance or upgrades.
