Currently in its 3d year, the Title III Project at the Community College of Micronesia-Federated States of Micronesia (COM-FSM) aims to strengthen academic programs with the integration of information technology into both the academic and administrative environments at the college. The project goals and activities include the national campus on Pohnpei and the four state branch campuses located on Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae, and Yap. In 1995, when the college moved to its new campus, it also boldly stepped into the world of modem technology with the purchase of 150 computers. Three major project activities were designed to help the college make the transition to the full integration of technology.
The development and implementation of an Intensive English Program augmented with computer technology at the college is one project activity. As virtually all students are speakers of English of a second language, the college hopes to strengthen students' language skills, decrease the time students spend in remedial courses, and improve success rates. The project has successfully piloted an Intensive English Program at the Pohnpei State Campus and is currently replicating the program at the other three state campuses. As state branch campuses are located on other islands geographically isolated by vast stretches of ocean from the national campus, the implementation of the program is challenging.
The second project activity involves establishing and implementing an electronic information environment in the Learning Resource Center at the National campus and extending this to the state campuses, Two computer banks provide students access for research purposes and for applications work. A Local Area Network (LAN) using a robust server and CD-ROM towers provides access to over 200 CD-ROM titles at the national campus. State campus LRC's will receive computers systems, cataloguing software programs, and with Internet access, will electronically access and share resources within the COM-FSM library system and international networks.
Implementing a Math/Science Computer Lab environment to enhance and strengthen teaching and learning is the third project activity. Currently at the national campus the math/science computer lab is fully operational. Implementations, research and review of the effective use of software programs for math and science courses continues. The MicronesScience Net, a component of this project activity, provides students and faculty a digital camera, scanner, and supporting software to publish science research results via Internet web pages. Training in computer skills, software application and using technology effectively is provided to both students and faculty.
Integration of technology for institutional management is also a part of the project's work at the college. Title III staff assists with the installation of Local Area Networks in administrative departments and provides training and support to administrators and staff in the use of information technology.
