tar: Write Protection

1 9.9 Write Protection
1 ====================
1
1 Almost all tapes and diskettes, and in a few rare cases, even disks can
1 be "write protected", to protect data on them from being changed. Once
1 an archive is written, you should write protect the media to prevent the
1 archive from being accidentally overwritten or deleted. (This will
1 protect the archive from being changed with a tape or floppy drive--it
1 will not protect it from magnet fields or other physical hazards.)
1
1 The write protection device itself is usually an integral part of the
1 physical media, and can be a two position (write enabled/write disabled)
1 switch, a notch which can be popped out or covered, a ring which can be
1 removed from the center of a tape reel, or some other changeable
1 feature.
