grep: Copying

1 GNU ‘grep’ is licensed under the GNU GPL, which makes it “free
1 software”.
1
1 The “free” in “free software” refers to liberty, not price. As some
1 GNU project advocates like to point out, think of “free speech” rather
1 than “free beer”. In short, you have the right (freedom) to run and
1 change ‘grep’ and distribute it to other people, and—if you want—charge
1 money for doing either. The important restriction is that you have to
1 grant your recipients the same rights and impose the same restrictions.
1
1 This general method of licensing software is sometimes called “open
1 source”. The GNU project prefers the term “free software” for reasons
1 outlined at
1 <http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html>.
1
1 This manual is free documentation in the same sense. The
1 documentation license is included below. The license for the program is
1 available with the source code, or at
1 <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>.
