1 13 The Maintainer’s View
1 ************************
1
1 The maintainer of a package has many responsibilities. One of them
1 is ensuring that the package will install easily on many platforms, and
1 that the magic we described earlier (⇒Users) will work for
1 installers and end users.
1
1 Of course, there are many possible ways by which GNU ‘gettext’ might
1 be integrated in a distribution, and this chapter does not cover them in
1 all generality. Instead, it details one possible approach which is
1 especially adequate for many free software distributions following GNU
1 standards, or even better, Gnits standards, because GNU ‘gettext’ is
1 purposely for helping the internationalization of the whole GNU project,
1 and as many other good free packages as possible. So, the maintainer’s
1 view presented here presumes that the package already has a
1 ‘configure.ac’ file and uses GNU Autoconf.
1
1 Nevertheless, GNU ‘gettext’ may surely be useful for free packages
1 not following GNU standards and conventions, but the maintainers of such
1 packages might have to show imagination and initiative in organizing
1 their distributions so ‘gettext’ work for them in all situations. There
1 are surely many, out there.
1
1 Even if ‘gettext’ methods are now stabilizing, slight adjustments
1 might be needed between successive ‘gettext’ versions, so you should
1 ideally revise this chapter in subsequent releases, looking for changes.
