1 1 The GNU ed line editor 1 ********************** 1 1 This manual is for GNU ed (version 1.14.2, 22 February 2017). 1 1 1 GNU ed is a line-oriented text editor. It is used to create, display, 1 modify and otherwise manipulate text files, both interactively and via 1 shell scripts. A restricted version of ed, red, can only edit files in 1 the current directory and cannot execute shell commands. Ed is the 1 "standard" text editor in the sense that it is the original editor for 1 Unix, and thus widely available. For most purposes, however, it is 1 superseded by full-screen editors such as GNU Emacs or GNU Moe. 1
