Peer educators and project staff do monthly outreach programs at local elementary and secondary schools. Students are at a stage when they are confronted with many choices that can affect their mental and physical well being, and because of of their limited knowledge about health and wellness, are at greater risk of making wrong choices. Peer health education, based on social learning and health behavior theories, is a proven, more effective way to reach young people and provide them with information and skills that will motivate them to make healthy decisions for themselves. That is why when school (elementary & high schools) are in session, we do outreach to schools who accept and/or request our services.
Peer educators are free to be creative in reaching many fellow students with their
messages. They may conduct their programs in the classrooms, resident halls, and other
student areas. Some examples of activities that peer educators can be involved in are:
a) to help organize activities for Alcohol and Other Drug Awareness Week
b) organize health fairs
c) present workshops and counseling sessions on RH/FP-SH and areas of interest to students
d) design IEC materials including helping to write articles for the bi-monthly newsletter.
e) promote artistic endeavors (songs, performances, booklets, etc.) to encourage positive
choices
